Do you need Relay, or is QuickBooks Checking enough?
We've written before about why we like Relay for Profit First banking, but not every business wants a full multi-account setup. For a business already living inside QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Checking is worth a look, because it's the one bank account that doesn't need a separate login at all.
It's free, and it's already synced
QuickBooks Checking has no monthly fee and no minimum balance to open. Because it's built by Intuit for Intuit's own accounting platform, transactions import and categorize in real time instead of on the delay you get from a typical bank feed. There's no separate integration to set up and nothing to break when a bank changes its connection on the back end, because there's no third-party connection in the first place.
Envelopes give you some Profit First structure, without separate accounts
QuickBooks Checking includes a feature called Envelopes, which lets you set aside portions of your balance for specific purposes — taxes, a big expense coming up, savings — and earn 3.00% APY on the money sitting in them. It's a lighter version of the account-splitting that Profit First is built around, useful if you want some intentional separation of funds without opening and managing several individual checking accounts.
If you want the full Profit First structure with genuinely separate accounts for Income, Profit, Owner's Compensation, Tax, and Operating Expenses, Relay is still the better fit. Envelopes are a good middle step for a business that wants more structure than one account but doesn't want to manage several.
What else is worth knowing
Deposits are FDIC-insured through Green Dot Bank, with a sweep feature that extends coverage up to $5 million. You get access to more than 19,000 fee-free Allpoint ATMs, and instant transfers to an external bank account carry a 1.75% fee. Standard ACH and wire transfers are also available for moving money without the instant-transfer cost.
Where it's not the right fit
If your business already runs full Profit First banking through Relay or another platform, adding QuickBooks Checking on top doesn't add much. It's built for simplicity inside the QuickBooks ecosystem, not as an upgrade to a multi-account system that's already working.
