PTO Policy Builder Checklist

A one-page checklist for putting your PTO policy in writing. It covers every decision the policy needs: who's eligible, how time accrues and caps out, carryover, how to request time, sick time, blackout dates, and what happens to unused time when someone leaves. Then it covers what keeps the policy running once it's in place.

It's for Virginia employers who offer PTO, or are about to. Virginia doesn't require most employers to offer PTO yet, but once you promise it, you have to honor it, and a paid sick leave law is on the way. The phase-in dates by employer size are on the same page.

Have your current handbook or PTO policy handy if you have one, and your employee count so you know when the sick leave law reaches you. When you're done, you'll have each piece of your policy decided and ready to write down, and a review date on the calendar.
